My late wife, Jen, was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer on May 12, 2016. The cancer was aggressive and rare. After living with no evidence of disease for 18 months, her cancer metastasized to her lungs in spring of 2018.
The cancer eventually spread throughout other parts of her body - her brain, spine, and abdomen to name a few. There was never really an end date on her treatments. She would stay on a chemo regimen until it stopped working, and then she moved to the next drug. Eventually, we ran out of options and she passed away peacefully on October 24, 2024.
Discussions on cuts or potential cuts to important cancer research is infuriating and insulting to all the people who have fought (and continue to fight) so valiantly to beat this terrible disease. The work being done right here in St. Louis at Siteman Cancer Center is vitally important. That is why Jen was so passionate about participating in and fundraising for Pedal the Cause. All the money raised goes directly to cancer research and clinical trials.
The doctors, researchers, and staff at Siteman are performing miracles every day. It is because of everyone at Siteman that Jen was able to be here as long as she was (which was not nearly long enough).
It takes world-class research to create a world without cancer. In the aftermath of her passing, so many people asked what they can do to help. This is truly something tangible that you can do that would honor her spirit of giving. She gave so much to this organization (even when she didn’t have much left in the tank) because she was so passionate about the work that they are helping to fund.
