If you were lucky enough to know Dave Hall, you know that he was always in "beast-mode", always training for a bike ride or running race. Part of his training was his diet - broccoli, spinach, oatmeal with flaxseed and wheatgerm, salads and meats grilled on his Big Green Egg. He was the picture of health. So in 2021, when he had pain in his leg and a hard knot, cancer never even crossed his mind. We didn't even know cancer could grow in a muscle, especially one as strong as his.
That knot turned out to be a a rare sarcoma subtype - rhabdomyosarcoma. Dave battled cancer like he trained for a bike race. Determination. Positivity. Utter belief that he could prevail against an aggressive and relentless cancer. He even ran a 10k two weeks before his surgery, in an atmospheric river no less! He endured rounds of horrific chemo, a complicated surgery and so much more to survive for me and our two young boys. Sadly, the cancer proved too powerful and Dave passed away in June, 2022, less than a year after his diagnosis.
We run in the Race to Cure Sarcoma to raise valuable funds for sarcoma research. Sarcoma accounts for one percent of adult cancers and of that there are over 100 subtypes. Thanks to the Race to Cure Sarcoma events, SFA has invested over $20 million in sarcoma research, funding over 200 grants in 12 countries leading to close to 200 total publications, adding to the sarcoma research discourse. This has led to $26 million+ in additional funding, 10+ clinical trials with 5 additional pending, and 2 patents.
In short, we run for the Dave's of tomorrow. Join us on the run and/or please support us!
Thank you for your support!
