Here are Peggy's words:
If you don’t already know, on February 10, 2021, I was diagnosed with Myxofibrosarcoma. The mass, soon to be named “Wanda,” was 14 cm long and nestled within my right hamstring. I immediately started care and first received 9 chemotherapy treatments, followed by 25 radiation treatments, followed by a resection of Wanda in late 2021. By May of 2022, Wanda had returned, again in my right thigh. I once again went through another 25 radiation treatments followed by a second resection. By fall of 2022, I developed an infection of my surgical site requiring a week’s stay in the hospital with 3 surgical debridements and massive amounts of antibiotic. After recovery, in February of 2023, I was scheduled for a femoral rod placement in my right leg due to bone fragility and increased risk of fracture of my femur. While preparing for that surgery, I felt an abnormal lymph node which first biopsied as negative, but then in May of 2023, re-biopsy proved a third recurrence of Wanda. Mid/summer brought chemo once again. Then immunotherapy. Then more chemo. Then clinical trial. Then more chemo. Then cryoablation. Then once again, infection in the leg, another week’s stay in the hospital and osteomyelitis of the femur. By January of 2025, we made the heart wrenching decision to amputate my leg at the hip. For 9 months, I recovered and grew and lived well … when in December of 2025, regular scans revealed a new mass. This time, it was a mass just below my trachea. So now … we start again! Electroablation in December followed by the initiation of chemo in January of 2026 ….
Thanks to a wonderful nurse, Lysbeth, I met during my 34th (!!!!!) chemo …. I have decided to lead a group to run/walk at this year’s Walk for Sarcoma!!!!
I am still here!! And it is much thanks to God leading me to my medical team, who is supported through funds raised through this race!!
Thanks to the Race to Cure Sarcoma events, SFA has invested over $20 million in sarcoma research, funding over 200 grants in 12 countries leading to close to 200 total publications, adding to the sarcoma research discourse. This has led to $26 million+ in additional funding, 10+ clinical trials with 5 additional pending, and 2 patents. Your investment in the RTCS events, is an investment in saving lives.
Please join us!!! Come and run, come and walk, come and cheer us on!!! I want the biggest team there!!!! If you can’t physically join us, please consider supporting this team through funds (though I REALLY want to have you there with us if you can! 😉) Every bit really does make a difference!!!
