Dear Friends and Family,

     This year, I’m participating in the American Cancer Society Bike-a-thon—a cause that is profoundly personal to me. As many of you know, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 during my first screening mammogram. I underwent a bilateral mastectomy, chemo, and radiation. I am still taking medications to prevent reoccurrence.

     I only had that mammogram scheduled because my cousin was diagnosed with colon cancer in her 30s. I only knew what to expect because I already had 2 friends in their 30s who were actively being treated for breast cancer. I am regularly told of new women my age who are being diagnosed with different cancers. And I already know the devastation of losing a young friend to this disease. 

     The rate at which young people are being diagnosed with and losing their lives to cancer is staggering and deeply alarming. It underscores the urgent need to fund cutting-edge research into the causes and provide resources for those affected.

     There is a 50% chance each that Penny, Avery, or Olivia will test positive for the PABL2 gene responsible for my cancer. I hope that by the time that they have to be tested, there will be more knowledge, less uncertainty, and that we are closer to a cure.
