Riding has been a hobby and passion of mine for 12 years now. I have participated in several rides throughout PA, NJ and NY but the Bike-A-Thon was always my favorite ride since it benefited the American Cancer Society and so many people and families I know have lost a loved one to cancer.
To say the least, 2018 was an extremely difficult year for my wife and I. In February, we lost our only daughter Lauren due to respiratory complications from RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) and ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome). A few months later in May a routine annual physical revealed trace microscopic blood in my urine which led me to a urologist for a possible kidney stone which quickly uncovered not a kidney stone, but actually a diagnosis of high grade Bladder Cancer. After surgery to remove the very large tumor in my bladder I began on a 3 year treatment plan with BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin). BCG is the most common form of Intravesical Immunotherapy for treating early-stage bladder cancer. It's used to help keep the cancer from growing and to help keep it from coming back. BCG is put right into the bladder through a catheter. It reaches the cancer cells and triggers the immune system to activate. The immune system cells are attracted to the bladder and attack the bladder cancer cells. BCG must come in contact with the cancer cells to work. This is why it's used for intravesical therapy. Due to the form of high-grade cancer that was found in my bladder, it comes with a high risk of re-occurrence.
Thankfully through continued treatments, frequent scopes for monitoring and having the most perfect and beautiful guardian angel watching over me from heaven (My Lauren), to date I have remained cancer free. As you can imagine, this ride has now become extremely personal to me. I am so grateful for currently being cancer free, however I know this can change at any time for me as well as anyone else I know or love. Together, we can finish the fight against cancer. With our help, the American Cancer Society saves lives by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. This progress is only possible with the support of people like you, so please support me in the 2026 Bike-A-Thon ride that benefits the American Cancer Society. Every donation helps someone in need and every little bit helps no matter how small of a donation.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for supporting me!
Love, Eddie
