The Tampa YMCA offers many health programs to improve the lives of our community. Our race benefits our health programs, focusing primarily on LIVESTRONG at the YMCA and Kid's Thrivers Club, both are cancer survivor programs. Your donations help those who have battled cancer to have the opportunity of reclaiming their health in a supportive group setting for small group exercise training sessions. In their groups, participants not only gain physical strength, but get support from other survivors and their coach.
A note from Becky, 2023 LIVESTRONG at the YMCA participant (photo above crossing the finish line):
My goal for the Y's Turkey Trot, other than finishing, was to bring smiles to everyone who saw this "ole" girl taking on the challenge of a 5K. I saw loads of smiles. At 72 I never imagined myself in a cancer walk, but the challenge was offered, greatly anticipated and met with a very thankful heart. I had the best coach, Terika, and teammates to encourage me every step along beautiful Bayshore Blvd. Yay, team!
With all of the mind games that accompany a cancer diagnosis, I was glad when I became aware of the Y's Livestrong Program. I was happy when after nearly a year I was going to be face to face with other travelers on this journey. I was happy when I was accepted into the program and even happier to meet and work with my teammates. I was and am inspired by each of these caring people who are very caring people. Learning of their challenges has continued to encourage me.
I'm living life, thankful for each day and each new adventure and the folks that God has put into my life.
One day at a time! One step at a time, until the race is run.
Thanks to everyone who made this experience one of great joy.
Other LIVESTRONG at the YMCA participants share their thoughts on the program:
"My oncologist recommended the program and attending made a difference with fatigue with journey. Attending while still on chemo. The bond with other cancer patients is priceless." - Susan, Bob Sierra
"It's a great program for cancer patients and survivors to know that all members have some kind of limitations the best part of the program is that a family member can come with you for the support and to do the program also." -Kennon, North Brandon
Chris: “As a college athlete, I had always worked out but it was more major weight stuff. At the Y, the trainer was putting me through a lot of body weight and TRX routines. You start to use your brain again. She and I just really clicked. She knew how to push me to just the right limit. She knew when I was getting too tired, too frustrated or just having a rough day. She was fantastic! I know I would not be as far along without the YMCA It truly is a life-changing program. If you have been through treatment, in my opinion, this is part of recovery.”
