This challenge will begin with the kayak portion at Primrose day use area (mile 18 off the Seward Highway) on Kenai Lake. With trail run to follow from the Primrose campground to Grayling Lake trailhead where bikes will be staged. Bike stands, bright clothing, and helmets are required for all participants. From mile 13.2 participant bikers will stay on the right side of Seward Highway headed South into Seward. The finish will be at the Wellington picnic area along waterfront park. There will be volunteers directing the cyclists on the course.
Bib check in: will only be from 7:15 to 8:15am Saturday morning at Wellington Picnic area. Racers are required to take the shuttle to the start of race. In order to obtain a permit through the Forest Service, we must shuttle participants to the start which leaves their parking lot open for their USFS customers and public. Participants and spectators park at the race finish line, Wellington Picnic area (908 Ballaine, across from Little League Field). In accordance with our USFS permit, absolutely no parking will be allowed at either Kayak or bike queues. SPRD will provide van transportation for participants only. Shuttle service begins 8am and the last shuttle will leave no later than 8:20am. Race starts promptly at 9am from Primrose.Staging areas: Please drop off kayaks first as early as 6 am Sat, July 22nd at the USFS Primrose Day Use area. SPRD Staff will camp overnight in at the kayak queue. Look for the identified vehicle near the kayaks. Kayaks must be picked up by 2:30 pm Saturday. After the kayak is dropped, SPRD staff will be staged at the bike queue (Meridian/Grayling Trailhead at mile 13.2) by 6 am, so you can set up your bike stand and shoes, etc…
Single, Sea Kayaks only for Kenai Lake. Kayak will start with Soloists category first, teams will start 5 minutes later. At the end of race dismount kayak at shore. Staff members will move your kayak and gear to the kayak queue for later pick up.After exiting from your kayak, you will then run through the campground area a short distance and get on the Primrose trail. Up the trail about a mile and ½ up the trail you will come to a fork. Stay to the left leading to Long Lake. Do NOT go right, to Lost Lake. There will be a volunteer at that fork directing runners to the left. You will run past Long Lake, then past Meridian Lake. (Do not go to Meridian Lake on the right. Continue running straight, as directed.) Runners will meet a third fork/divide, and will stay left again. The run trail terminates at the bike queue for your final leg. The run trail is gradual, a little hilly in spots and very well-groomed. There will be markers along both the run and bike courses. Water stations will be at the Kayak & Bike queue areas. Bike portion the race will begin at Meridian / Grayling trailhead parking lot. Bike stands, bright clothing, and helmets are required for all participants. From mile 13.2 participant bikers will stay on the right side of Seward Highway headed south into Seward. Once you arrive in Seward, bikers will make a right on Sea Lion Ave (around mile 2). Ride up Sea Lion, follow left turn through the High School gate heading south through parking lot. Continue biking south, downhill on Swetmann which becomes Resurrection Blvd. Turn right/south on Alice toward bike path. Take bike path, turn right/west on Dairy Hill, bike uphill. Follow Dairy Hill which becomes Second (2nd)) Ave. Bike on Second (2nd) Ave to the end of pavement. Turn right/west at Washington to Brownell Alley. Turn left/south onto Brownell, gravel alley to Railway Ave. Turn left/east on Railway Ave, past Alaska SeaLife Center. Continue east, past Iditarod park. Follow curve onto Ballaine bike on right side of street to Wellington Picnic area. There will be a SPRD staff stationed at the 1st right off SWD HWY directing bikers. From that point on there will be no traffic control only directional signage. The bike course will be marked with mile markers.
There is an event time-limit of six (5) hours. If racers are not off the run trail by 12 pm, they will be DQ’d. SPRD staff will sweep the trail after the last runner and sweep the bike route after the last biker.
Participant clothing and/or gear can be left at transition areas. SPRD staff will transport clothing to finish line at Wellington Picnic area. Here, racers will find their vehicle, their support team, cold beverages and a hot and refreshing picnic. Awards will be given out at this time.
