Description
We know it’s been a tough year for competitive sports and it’s even harder to get excited about virtual events, but let’s face it – that’s what we’ve got to work with this year!  We hope this one adds a little bit of variety to your swimming, biking, and running.
For the entire months of July and August we’ll be taking all of the individual events in Tri Santa Cruz and creating some opportunities to challenge yourself.  The trick is that you have to “Do It Yourself” - the DIY Tri.
You can do this anywhere you want, anytime you want between July 1 and August 31.  You do not have to do all segments on the same day.  You can do them separate days and then upload your results. Not only that - you can do redos of your results.  For example if you run a 5K and your time gets better the second time you can go in and repost your results so that your final result at the end of August could represent your PR time!
Multiple event discounts are available:
  • 3 events = 10% discount
  • 4 events = 15% discount
  • 5 or more events = 20% discount
Not bad for an event that costs $15!
Be sure to check out the race kit link to find your DIY Race Kit.  At the end of the race we'll be sending out finisher medals to everyone who participated, but in the meantime you can amuse yourself and engage your family members in helping you to create a cool race kit for your photo opportunities!

How Does This Work?

There are 10 separate events included in the overall DIY Tri.  Do only one, or as many as you want.

  • International Distance Triathlon (Swim 1500m, Bike 40K, Run 10K)*

  • International Distance Aquabike (Swim 1500m, Bike 40K)

  • International Distance Aquathlon (Swim 1500m, Run 10K)

  • Standard USAT Distance Duathlon (Run 10K, Bike 40K, Run 5K)

  • Sprint Distance Triathlon (Swim 750m, Bike 20K, Run 5K)

  • Sprint Distance Aquabike (Swim 750m, Bike 20K)

  • Sprint Distance Aquathlon (Swim 750m, Run 5K)

  • Sprint Distance Duathlon (Run 5K, Bike 20K, Run 2.5K)

  • 5K Run

  • 10k Run

* For those of you who don’t do Metric here’s a quick conversion:
Swim:                                      Bike:                                        Run:
1500m = 1640 yds                  40K = 24.8 miles                     10K = 6.2 miles
750m =  820 yds                     20K = 12.4 miles                     5k = 3.1 miles

Can You Beat these Guys?

Everyone knows our local Santa Cruz elite triathletes Tommy and Katie Zafares, right?  Just in case you don't know - Katie is the number one ranked female triathlete in the world right now, and Tommy is an elite athlete and professional photographer who follows the ITU circuit and creates the most spectacular race photograhy.

They have offered up a challenge for you for the DIY Tri - beat their segment times for a swim, bike or run (or whole race time) for a sprint or Olympic triathlon and we'll get you some pretty cool goodies and recognition.  The only rule is that women have to try and beat Katie's time and men have to beat Tommy's time.

Sprint Times to Beat (750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run)

Katie's times for the Abu Dhabi Sprint are:

  • Swim 9:08
  • Bike  28:55
  • Run 16:09
  • Total 55:31

Tommy's Sprint Times for Patco Sprint Pan American Cup (2nd Overall)

  • Swim 7:54
  • Bike  26:50
  • Run 15:19
  • Total 51:43

Olympic Times to Beat (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run)

Katie's Olympic Times for Yokohama Olympic Distance

  • Swim 18:46
  • Bike 58:02
  • Run 34:07
  • Total 1:52:12

Tommy's Olympic Time for Moololaba ITU

  • Swim  13:41
  • Bike 56:34
  • Run 34:25
  • Total 1:46:01

Sign Up For Multiple Events

You will have the opportunity during registration to sign up for as many events as you want.  You can choose to do only one, do one a week, or all 10 events in the month. It’s totally up to you.

Each event is $15 (Seriously, we wanted to make them all free but even with a virtual event we have to pay for things like websites, sanction and insurance, prizes, mailing, etc).

If you do a couple of the events and decide to come back and do more you can just log in and sign up for more events. The multiple event discount will apply when you have more than 3 events in your cart.

Your bib numbers for each event will be automatically assigned as you register, each event will have a different bib number so they can match up with results files, and they will show up in your athlete profile for each event.  If for some reason you can’t find them we’ll help you!

What's Included In My Registration

When you register you will automatically get a pdf file that has artwork for the following items included:

  • All the race information and instructions for creating your kit and publishing results
  • Race Bib (you write in your own number based on the event)
  • Athlete Wristband (just because it's traditional with Tri Santa Cruz!)
  • T-Shirt Logo Transfer Art acceptable to print and iron-on (we told you it was DIY!)
  • Finishers Medal Artwork
  • Once you've finished your events and uploaded your results we'll send you a finisher's packet that includes a real finisher medal, any prizes you might win and sponsor goodies!
This is a USA Triathlon Sanctioned Virtual Event

If you are an annual member we will ask for your number during registration. If you are not an annual member you WILL NOT have to pay for the one-day USAT License.   USAT will be back-end processing of one-day membership licenses for all participants from our submitted registration lists.  You'll be asked to sign the USAT Virtual Event Waiver as part of your registration process.  Other than that, there's nothing else you have to do!

Unfortunately, because it’s a virtual event there won’t be any annual rankings but we still want to keep track of who is participating - and don't forget we'll have some fun - because that's the purpose of this whole thing!

Awards and Prizes

As some incentive for submitting your results our sponsor Road ID has provided some very generous $35 gift certificates for participants.  The top two male and female finishers in each individual event will be receiving one of these.   Combined with the $10 certificate you get just for registering you’ll be able to order some amazing Road ID swag.

We’re still working with sponsors on the prizes for those of you who do more than one event or for clubs who take on the challenge.  We’ll make sure they are fun and something the whole team can share!
