Race Director Notes
Hello,
Thanks for your interest in the Bob Marshall trail races. We have been putting on this event for over a decade. It was the event that started Wolf Pack Running. We know the area well.
First things first. You get to the start finish (Seeley Creek Nordic Trails) by driving through if headed North on HWY 83 from Missoula or Helena, the small town of Seeley Lake, and taking a right on Morrell Creek Road just past the new :( Dollar General Store. If you are heading south on 83 from the Kalipel/Bigfork area, you will take a left on Morrell Creek Road before the town of Seeley Lake. The start/finish is one mile up the gravel Morrell Creek road. The local gas station/harware store, Roveros, in the heart of Seeley Lake, is a good stop for last-minute supplies and flush toilets.
All races begin at 9 am. The first section is on the Seeley Creek Nordic Trails. This is a maintained trail system that is groomed for Nordic skiing during the winter months. The trails are rolling and very runnable. The first 10K is on the ski trail system and has a 475-foot gain/loss. This also serves as the first 4 miles of the ½ Marathon and 25K loop.
After departing the ski trails, the route travels on an open but not busy Forest Service road. The first
section may have some cars, but after a mile or so, you will feel like you are back on the trail. This section is around 4.5 miles and gains 450 feet. There is a fully manned aid station about halfway through this section at miles 6.5-7 on the course.
The fun begins after this. You take a hard left into the woods to run the “Wilderness” section of the route. Depending on the year, this can be a wildflower mecca with greenery and small pockets of water, or extremely dry. Be warned, this is a lightly maintained section of singletrack that parallels the actual Bob Marshall Wilderness. It will be well marked, but this is as Montana as trail running gets! This section is about 3 miles and drops 300 feet. Great section for some selfies, as you can see the peaks of the Bob.
After the Wilderness section, you will once more pass the aid station for the final cruise back to the start finish. If you are doing the 50K or the Marathon, you will repeat the same loop twice. Be sure to fuel up at the start/finish area. The 50K/Marathon split for a bit on the ski trails, but overlap on the remainder of the course.
This is truly a great event. The terrain is runnable, the scenery is amazing, and there are a few dive bars to catch a post-race beverage!
