For most of us, it’s a day we remember through television screens — the smoke, the sirens, the confusion. For my mother, it was the day she ran toward what everyone else was running from.
When the towers of the World Trade Center were struck during the attacks on September 11 attacks, she didn’t hesitate. As a first responder, she answered the call. While fear gripped the nation, she put on her uniform and stepped into uncertainty.
She worked long hours in conditions no one could have prepared for — thick smoke, falling debris, and the overwhelming weight of human loss. She helped guide people to safety, risking her own health forming COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) — due to prolonged exposure to toxic dust at the World Trade Centersite.
Being a Dalsh dawg is personal because he was a family friend working with my mom in the 67 precinct. We climb in honor of first responders like my mom and Detective Veve who was critically injured in the line of duty while doing what he loved: protecting others. His strength, his fight, and the love surrounding him continue to inspire everyone who knows his story.
