ALFA Kids Triathlon – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ALFA Kids Triathlon?

The ALFA Kids Triathlon is a fun, beginner-friendly race designed for children ages 6–13. Participants will swim, bike, and run in a safe, supportive environment at the Meadville Area Recreation Complex. The focus is on fun, fitness, and finishing!

When and where is the event?

The race will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at the Meadville Area Recreation Complex (MARC) in Meadville, PA. Athletes should plan to arrive early to set up their transition area. We recommend getting to the race at least 1 hour prior to start time. Transition and athlete check-in opens at 7:30 a.m.

Who can participate?

The event is open to boys and girls ages 6–13, regardless of athletic background. See note below about the importance of training.

How does a triathlon work?

A triathlon is made up of three parts: swim, bike, and run — completed in that order. Each athlete moves through the events continuously, with a brief stop in between called a transition. Transitions are where participants switch from swimming to biking (Transition 1, or “T1”) and from biking to running (Transition 2, or “T2”).

At the ALFA Kids Triathlon, all transitions will take place in one secure, clearly marked area called the transition area. Before the race, kids will set up their bike, helmet, shoes, towel, and any other gear in their assigned spot. Volunteers will be there to help guide participants in and out of the area safely. Please note: There are no private changing spaces during the race, and athletes must be clothed at all times. Athletes may use the locker room prior to the race and following the race.

What are the race distances?

Race distances will vary by age group to ensure safety and fairness. Athletes will be given a color-coded wristband to designate their age category that must be worn during the race.

  • Ages 6–9: 50-yard swim, 2-mile bike, ½-mile run
  • Ages 10–13: 100-yard swim, 3-mile bike, 1-mile run

Are the bike and run courses closed to traffic?

Yes. Both routes are closed to traffic.

Can my child do only part of the race or form a relay team?

No — the ALFA Kids Triathlon is designed for each participant to complete all three portions of the event: swim, bike, and run. Distances are intentionally short and age-appropriate, ensuring that every child can finish safely and confidently.

What should my child wear or bring?

Most participants wear a swimsuit for the swim portion and then pull on necessary clothing for the bike and run. Some athletes choose to wear a tri suit — a one-piece or two-piece outfit made for all three sports — but it’s not required. Please note: There are no private changing spaces during the race, and athletes must be clothed at all times. Athletes may use the locker room prior to the race and following the race.

Here’s what each participant should plan to bring:

  • Swim gear: Swimsuit, goggles, towel, and flotation device if desired (see below for additional details). A swim cap will be provided.
  • Bike gear: A safe, working bicycle, a helmet (mandatory), and appropriate biking shoes. Electric bikes and scooters are not permitted.
  • Run gear: Comfortable shoes and clothing.
  • Optional: Sunglasses, a water bottle, and a small snack for before or after the race.

Tip: Label all personal items to avoid mix-ups in transition!

Is this event safe for beginners?

Absolutely! The course is designed specifically for kids and first-time triathletes. We’ll have lifeguards, volunteers along the course, and staff at every transition and finish area. See note below about the importance of training.

Can parents stay with their child during the race?

Absolutely! We know many kids are new to triathlon, and parent support is always welcome — with a few important guidelines to keep things safe and fair for all participants.

  • Swim portion: Parents may not be in the water with their child. Lifeguards and volunteers will be present at all times to ensure athlete safety. If your child is nervous, they may wear a personal floatation device (i.e. life jacket, arm floaties, waist float), and our volunteers will be ready to encourage and assist from the pool deck.
  • Transition area: Each athlete may have one parent or adult helper in the transition area to assist with things like putting on shoes, fastening a helmet, or helping find their bike.
  • Bike and run portions: Parents may ride or run alongside their athlete if they feel it’s necessary, especially for younger or first-time participants. However, we encourage independence whenever possible to help build confidence and give kids the full triathlon experience.
    • NOTE: Parents who opt to ride with their child are responsible for their own equipment. No adult bikes are allowed in transition.

How is the race timed and are there awards?

Each athlete will receive a timing chip, worn around the ankle, that records their total race time, including transitions. This means the clock keeps running from the moment they start the swim until they cross the finish line.

While the event celebrates participation and fun first, we will also recognize top finishers in each age group with awards. Every athlete, regardless of finish time, will receive a finisher medal to celebrate their effort and accomplishment.

What do participants receive?

Each registered participant will receive:

  • An ALFA KIDS swim cap
  • A color-coded wristband to designate their age group
  • A finisher medal
  • Post-race snacks and refreshments

Why is training important, and how can my child prepare?

Training helps kids feel more confident and comfortable on race day. It’s not about speed — it’s about familiarity and safety. Knowing what to expect makes the event smoother and more enjoyable.

Here are a few easy ways to train:

  • Swim: Practice swimming laps or short distances in a pool. Focus on endurance and comfort in the water, not speed.
  • Bike: Ride around the neighborhood or local trails to build balance and confidence. Practice starting, stopping, and turning.
  • Run: Go for short runs or jogs a few times a week. Include some walking breaks if needed.
  • Transitions: At home, try moving from one activity to another — for example, jump out of the pool, dry off quickly, and hop on your bike. It’s great practice!

Can my child use training wheels?

Yes! Training wheels are allowed for younger participants to help make the event accessible and confidence-building for everyone.

Can my child wear a floatation device for the swim?

Yes, athletes may wear a personal floatation device if they are not yet comfortable swimming independently. Lifeguards and volunteers will be present at all times to ensure safety.

Do you provide bikes or other equipment for participants to use?

Unfortunately, we do not have equipment available to borrow or rent. Each athlete is responsible for bringing their own bike, helmet, and running shoes on race day. For safety reasons, all bikes must be in good working condition, and helmets are required at all times during the bike portion.

Can family and friends come to watch?

Absolutely — spectators are encouraged and appreciated! Aside from the one adult allowed in the transition area to assist their athlete, parents, siblings, and friends are invited to cheer from designated viewing areas around the course. Signs, cowbells, and loud encouragement are all welcome — cheering makes the day even more fun for the kids!

We ask that spectators stay off the course and follow volunteer directions to keep athletes safe. Help us create an exciting, supportive atmosphere as every young triathlete crosses the finish line!

How can I help or volunteer?

We’d love your help! Parents, teachers, and community members are encouraged to volunteer on race day. Opportunities include check-in, course monitoring, and cheering at the finish line. Clearances are required. Visit https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/Meadville/ALFAKidsTriathlon for details.

What happens if it rains?

The event will take place rain or shine unless weather conditions pose a safety concern (such as lightning). In that case, updates will be posted on social media and emailed to participants.

What is the refund policy?

All registrations for the ALFA Kids Triathlon are non-refundable, non-transferrable and non-deferral. Because race planning, permits, and materials are secured in advance, we are unable to offer refunds for any reason, including schedule conflicts or weather-related issues. In the event of severe weather, race organizers will make every effort to delay or modify the event so participants can still enjoy a safe and positive experience.

How do we register?

Registration is at https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/Meadville/ALFAKidsTriathlon. Early sign-ups are encouraged to give your athlete time to train. Price increases happen as we approach race day.
