I wanted to take a minute to update you on our decision timeline related to the Eureka Springs Multisport Festival aka “The Eurekan”. As everyone continues to navigate through the challenges of COVID-19…the Eurekan committee, volunteers, City of Eureka Springs, Holiday Island and many other surrounding cities want to provide you as much clarity as possible during the coming 2 weeks regarding our plans for the 10th anniversary of this great event.
There are two major items of note. First, will an event such as The Eurekan be allowed to be held without mandatory social distancing and PPE protocols and secondly, will there be enough athletes registered to hold the event? Our timeline to gain clarity on both factors is June 8th with a final decision on June 15th.
We are waiting on the announcement from the Governor’s office on the status of Phase 3. As Arkansas and surrounding states implement a controlled phasing-in of business and outdoor activities, I am confident that will provide a pathway for outdoor events such as the Eureka Springs Multisport Festival to take place. However, we are not certain that our original date of July 17-19 will meet our criteria. If the original date is not possible then we plan to postpone to the second or third weekend of August. Also, there could be the possibility of a virtual only event and/or a virtual option for the actual event. But that’s not been decided due to the nature of The Eurekan event.
If the Governor and the local authorities give the go ahead by June 8th, then we will ask athletes to indicate their willingness to attend by sign ups by June 15th. As has been a standard, registration price increases occur on set dates each year, but we have placed a moratorium on price increases until we are certain we are able to hold the event.
We’re in weekly contact with state and local agencies, as well as the national governing bodies of cycling/triathlon/running events, to ensure we have the most up-to-date data and information on the status of COVID-19 and the impact it could have on The Eurekan, but rest assured, we have contingencies ready for all scenarios.
So many of you have contacted us to say you are ready to participate, and that’s very encouraging! In fact, 86% of athletes involved in a number of sports who were polled across the state, region and nationally, said they are ready to participate in mass outdoor gatherings. We do, however, understand that some people will choose to not participate in mass outdoor gatherings for a variety of reasons, and we respect their decisions as well.
I sincerely appreciate your past and current support and together, we will overcome the challenges of this unprecedented time. Until then, “all we can do is just keep moving forward.”
We will be in touch very soon for further updates!
