First Candle is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related infant deaths for more than 35 years. In 1994 they partnered with the National Institutes of Health on the Back to Sleep campaign, which led to a reduction in the rate of SIDS by more than 50%. Despite this, sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), which includes SIDS and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ASSB), remains the leading cause of death for babies one month to one year of age. Due to SUID more than 300 babies every month may not live to see their first birthday. Infant mortality rates in the U.S. are also higher than in the 20 wealthiest nations.
First Candle provides support for grieving families, offers educational resources, and advocates for research and public health initiatives aimed at reducing the incidence of infant mortality. Through various programs, First Candle aims to inform parents and caregivers about safe sleep practices, while also fostering a supportive community for those affected by the loss of a child. Their work includes outreach, training for healthcare providers, and collaboration with other organizations to enhance awareness and resources related to infant health and safety.
