This is an OFF ROAD triathlon and duathlon. Internationally, it is known as "cross triathlon". The full length races (tri and du and relay) will require a mountain bike and the ability to carry water on that bike or person during the mountain bike leg. The explorer length off road triathlon is an introduction to "off-roading" and might be accomplished on a hybrid if you are willing to walk in a few spots.
The full length off road triathlon kicks off our adventure with an 800 meter swim before transitioning to a 12 mile (19.3km) mountain bike course full of twists and turns, climbs and descents, and rocks and roots. The bike leg is a double loop of the trails with a mix of fast double track and technical single track trails. It is strongly recommended that you have previous mountain bike experience before entering the full length tri or du. The 4 mile (6.4km) run takes a stroll through the Wildlife Prairie Park on mixed surfaces and is highlighted by running alongside the animals that inhabit the park. It’s time to get WILD! Hammer Nutrition is sponsoring the aid stations.
The off road relay is swim-mtn bike-trail run and covers the full off road triathlon distance. It requires a mountain bike for the cycling leg. 2 or 3 athletes allowed. (2 athletes- means one athlete does 2 legs) 3 athletes means each athlete does one leg only.
The off road duathlon begins with a 2 mile (3.2km) trail run followed by the same technical 12 mile mountain bike and 4 mile trail run as the triathlon.
The new off road Explorer triathlon consists of a 1/8 mile (200 mtr) swim, 3 mile mountain bike (4.8km) and 1 mile trail run.(1.6km). A mountain bike is the best choice of bikes, but a hybrid bike may be able to complete this course if the athlete is willing to walk in a few technical spots. This is not the Rock Island trail type of trail. It is grass and dirt with some roots and rocks.
T-shirts, Tri-swim caps and Hammer samples are included with your entry. Light snacks provided after the races.
