What's the same? It's an aquathlon - swim & run event. Think triathlon without the bike! There are two individual distances for the event. The two distances are 1500 meter swim/4 mile run and a 750 meter swim/4 mile run. USAT sanctioned event and rankings eligible for Aquathlon standings.
What's new this year? We've added back in the individual Open Water Swim for both distances for people who want to try out their racing skills with a singel loop around the buoys or a double loop around the buoys. Plus, there is a standalone 4 mile run. Because this is part of a USA Triathlon event you will still need to purchase a USAT one-day membership if you are not an annual member.
If you're looking to practice - you can swim two loops around the buoys at Cowell Beach and run up West Cliff to Getchell Street and back to the beach for the longer distance. One loop around the buoys and up to Getchell and back for the shorter distance.
What's different for this year? Pretty much everything else.
The event will start and finish on Cowell Beach between the Dream Inn and the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. We will determine wave starts based on registration numbers for each event.
There will be limited volunteer placement on the course in order to maintain social distancing but not at the expense of runner safety. However, family and friends of athletes are encouraged to help out at the start and finish lines in order to see and support your athletes. You may also want to volunteer at the aid-station turnaround as an opportunity to cheer runners. Athletes will be able to follow the arrows and signs on the out and back run course.
Proceeds from this event will support Rotary International's Polio Plus Program. This horrible disease was the last worldwide epidemic and most of us don't remember it because we haven't had a polio case in the US since the 70s. But that's not the case in other parts of the world. Not only that, but Polio Plus has also using it's infrastructure to support COvid-19 vaccinations around the world. I major effort that needs much more support! You can read more about Polio Plus by clicking on the menu link at the top of the page.
There are two distances of swim-run events for this race in 2021.
THIS MAY BE SUBJECT TO CHANGE DEPENDING ON COVID-19 REQUIREMENTS. WE'LL NOW CLOSER TO THE RACE AND UPDATE EVERYONE.
All packet pickup and on-site registration will take place at the Cowell Beach parking lot adjacent to the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf starting at 7:00 am. This is also transition for the event so the lot will be totally closed to parking or drive through. The best place to park is in Depot Park at 119 Center Street - about a block up from the beach behind the National Marine Sanctuary Center.
Remember to bring a photo ID to packet pickup to get your bib and timing chip. You must be present to pick up your own race materials.
