BIKE

Get ready for an exhilarating bike ride at the Motor City Triathlon, where athletes can choose from distances of 23.5 miles, 20 kilometers, or 10 kilometers. The bike course is a standout feature of the event, offering a closed, coned route around Belle Isle that boasts stunning scenery and lightning-fast speeds.

As you pedal your way around the island, soak in the picturesque views of large freighters gliding through the waters on the Canadian side, the iconic Detroit skyline, and the majestic Ambassador Bridge to the south. The course is predominantly flat, ensuring a swift and thrilling ride that has witnessed numerous athletes achieving personal bests in bike splits.

One of the unique aspects of the course is the fluctuating winds, with one side of the island often providing a tailwind while the other presents a headwind. This adds an element of strategy and excitement to the ride, requiring cyclists to adapt their position and technique accordingly. With speeds exceeding 40 mph reported by course coordinators and Michigan State Police during tailwind conditions, prepare for an adrenaline-fueled journey.

Olympic distance athletes will complete four loops of the island, while Sprint, Duathletes, and Super Sprint athletes will complete two or one loop, respectively. Communication and awareness are crucial on this course, particularly with slower riders advised to stay along the curb on the inside lane of the island. Passing etiquette is essential, so be sure to communicate your intentions when overtaking other athletes.

An important note: due to the point-to-point nature of the event, athletes must ensure they have all their swim and bike gear at Transition 1 located at the beach. Duathletes will transition from Transition 2, running from the beach to Transition 2. Make the most of this unique biking experience at the Motor City Triathlon, where speed, scenery, and excitement collide on Belle Isle.
