Course Maps for the Race!
Speaking with the NMSU Facilities and Structures team resulted in the following route changes. Both the bike and run follow a simple loop on closed roads around the back side of NMSU Campus. All roads on the course map will be closed for the duration of the event. The swim follows a snake swim route through the outdoor pool.
Run Course Map
The run course starts on Stewart Street outside of the Activity Center. It will be two laps of the route shown in the map for a total of 3.02 miles (each lap is 1.51 miles). Runners proceed on the right side of the shoulder and sidewalk of Stewart and turn onto S. Locust. They continue past the grass fields behind the AC and turn right after the wind tunnel building. They continue straight until Research Rd. where they turn right onto Wells street. Runners will stay on the right side of Wells street heading toward the bottom of campus to allow bikers to make the turn. They run for a short period on Wells street and turn onto Williams heading back to the AC. They then turn up Stewart again for their second lap. Runners must run around the transition area to allow bikers to come in and out of the transition area (see transition map at bottom). When completing the final lap, runners enter into the right hand side of the transition area to grab their bikes (see map). An aid station will be located roughly halfway through the lap where runners turn onto Wells St.
Bike Course Map
The cycling course starts from the transition area and follows the run course, but is on the right hand side of the road. The cycling loop is 1.77 miles in length, meaning that each cyclist must complete 7 laps to complete the 12 mile bike. Laps are counted by the individual athlete like in the Lobo Triathlon. Cyclists have the entire road to use for passing, slower athletes should remain on the right to allow others to pass. The only difference between the cycling route and the running route is at the end of South Locust, cyclists do NOT turn where the runners do. Cyclists will continue and turn onto Research Rd. where it intersects S Locust (see map). Cyclists come up Research Rd and follow the same route the runners do. There is a tricky spot of rough road on the right hand side of Wells street, so cyclists will be directed via cones to go down the left hand side of Wells. This should avoid the bumpy section turning onto Williams Street. Finishing the lap, cyclists turn from Williams onto Stewart and go straight on Stewart for their next lap. On the final lap, cyclists enter into the transition area on the left hand side of the transition area to put their bikes in and transition to the swim.
Swim Course Map
The swim course will be a snake swim similar to many pool triathlons. The advantage of having the swim last is that ideally we will not have a lot of congestion in the pool. We are hoping to use the outdoor 50 meter pool for our race, but it may not be open by the time of the race. In that case, we will use the indoor pool and split the lanes for each direction. Passing will be difficult in the water, but this will enable us to have a swim 300 yds in length. If the outdoor pool is open, we will have the full 400 meter distance.
Transition Area Map
The transition area will be located in the parking lot of the Aquatic Center. The entrance will be split between runners and cyclists, although it is unlikely that a runner and a cyclist will be entering the transition area at the same time, it is possible so the entrance lane will be split in half for runners and bikers. Similarly, runners on their second lap will pass around the transition area in front of the pool in order to keep cyclist and runner paths separate.
