Description

“Coach’s Just Du It!” duathlon was created by family and friends of Scott Woodward, a long time Peru High School cross-country and track coach and a lifelong running and cyclist enthusiast.  All proceeds of the duathlon will endow a memorial scholarship fund at Peru Central School established in his name.  With the generosity of duathlon participants, sponsors, family and friends, three annual scholarships will be awarded to a PCS female and male cross-country and/or track member and a varsity football player who will be pursuing a post-secondary education. The first scholarships will be awarded in June 2017.

The first 100 registrants will receive a registration gift on race day. Awards will be given to the first three finishers in each age group of each division (individual, team and fat tire division). Sign up early and encourage your friends and fellow runner/cyclists enthusiasts to join you!

The Scott W. Woodward Memorial Scholarship Fund was created as a way to remember a husband, brother, uncle, friend and coach.  Scott’s greatest passion and legacy was that of coach. Throughout his coaching career and beyond, Scott mentored hundreds of aspiring athletes whether they were members of his team, the opposing team or a weekend warrior. He believed in discipline, hard work and setting a good example for others. Scott unexpectedly passed away in April 2016 and is missed by all whose lives he touched.

“Scott was a breed of individuals that transcends being a teacher, coach or athlete

and the type of person that too few people strive to be.” – Jeremy Drowne

Coach Scott Woodward’s “Just DU It” duathlon will begin with running participants starting at the Lapham Mills Recreation Park and heading out to NYS Route 22 West towards the Village of Peru. Except for a short downhill incline at the beginning and end of the run, participants can expect a level running surface where they will run approximately 1.25 miles to the entrance of the Peru Hayworth Mason (Little AuSable River) Trail just east of the entrance to the Village of Peru. Along the route you will see open land, but please remember you are running along a state highway so be careful! At the entrance to the Hayworth Mason Trail, you will turn around and head back to the Lapham Mills Recreation Park, crossing Route 22 near the Military Turnpike Extension to the Lapham Mills Road just before the Recreation Park. Once the first run segment of the duathlon is complete, you (or your team) will transition to the bike race.

Cyclists will leave the Lapham Mills Recreation Park heading east on the Lapham Mills Road for approximately 3 miles. Once you have cycled across the Interstate 87 overpass, you will cycle through the hamlet of Lapham Mills encountering a few curves before the county road straightens out with some gentle rolling hills past pastures and farmland. At the end of Lapham Mills Road, you will cycle right onto NYS Route 9 South and cycle for approximately three miles along beautiful sites of Lake Champlain and the mountains of Vermont on your left.

Once beyond the AuSable Point Campsite Entrance, you will continue to cycle along Route 9 South turning right onto Caristrap Road where you will encounter a sharp incline for about 2/10ths of a mile before turning right onto the Jabez Allen Road where the road is fairly flat and your views are of lazy farmlands and country homes with Lake Champlain off to your right. At the end of the Jabez Allen Road, you will turn left onto the Bear Swamp Road (County Route 442 – be very aware of traffic and traffic control at this point) for about a mile before you encounter a 2/10ths of a mile steep incline. Once pass the incline, you will cycle for another 2/10ths of a mile on relatively flat surface before encountering a steep 3/10ths of a mile incline passing by Rulf’s Orchards, the I87 overpass and then turning right onto Dashnaw Road. You will cycle for 1.6 miles along the Dashnaw Road which is a flat country road for most of the way, turning a sharp left before heading down an incline and up and then turning left at the stop sign to the finish line at Lapham Mills Recreation Park. Once the cycling leg of the duathlon is complete, you or your team member will repeat the run segment running a second 2.5 miles west along Route 22 out to the Hayworth Mason Trail entrance before the Village of Peru and back to the Lapham Mills Recreation Park to end the race.
