Race Director Notes
Thanks for your interest in participating in the Bob Marshall Trail Races, part of the Montana Trail Series! This is the race that started it all, and it remains a top event after hundreds of other races.
The races will begin at the Seeley Creek Nordic Trails, located a few miles from Seeley Lake, MT, on Morrell Creek Road. You can find the location on Google Maps. Please note that Morrell Creek Road is gravel, and you'll need to travel a few miles along it to reach the trailhead. There are primitive toilets at the start/finish area, but expect a small line. It's a good idea to stop by the local gas station (Rovero’s) for any last-minute supplies and a restroom break.
The races kick off at 9 am, and this event is chip-timed. There is plenty of free parking available a few hundred yards from the start/finish area; you may need to get a bit creative with your parking, but you will find a spot. There's no need to arrive early, as registration will open at 8 am and we won't be available before then. In your registration bag, you’ll receive a gel, a fizz, and electrolyte tablets. While there will be water available at the start/finish, it's best to arrive with your hydration vessels filled.
You'll find water at mile 3, a "full" aid station at mile 6 (the finish of the 10K), and at miles 9 and 13 (these distances might vary slightly depending on whether you run the half-marathon or the 25-50K). Aid stations will provide water, juice boxes, Sprite, Coke, small candies, fizz tablets, apples, salty potato chips, salt tablets, and basic first-aid supplies. If you are running more than 10K, we strongly recommend bringing a hydration vest or a handheld water bottle.
The first part of the course, as well as the entire 10K, is on rolling Nordic ski trails—there aren't significant ascents or descents, but there are very few prolonged flat sections. While you’ll find some shade, expect hot conditions. The courses are marked with orange flagging and specific distance signage. The second part of the half-marathon and the 25-50K courses will take you along a gravel Forest Service road. This section is exposed, so don't forget your sunscreen!
For the half-marathon and 25-50K courses, there's a challenging 3-mile section known as the "Wilderness." This rocky and broken single track runs alongside the Bob Marshall Wilderness, offering a true wilderness experience and stunning views of the valley and the distant Mission Mountains. After completing this section, you'll reach the aid station again.
While the terrain may not feature major climbs or descents by trail-running standards, the dry, hot conditions prevalent in this area at this time of year present their own challenges. Be sure to pace yourself, drink often, and always carry some fuel with you. Marathon and 50K runners have the option to drop to the half-marathon or 25K after finishing their first loop. You can leave personal items either at the start/finish area or in your vehicle nearby.
Results will be posted during the event and can be found at www.wolfpackresults.com.
