It is with heavy hearts that we announce the cancellation of the 2020 Lake Hartwell Y Triathlon. This event has become an annual highlight for our YMCA and all of the athletes who travel from all over the South to participate in this event. We have been staying informed of all of the CDC recommendations and from our Governor, and we feel as though it is in the best interest to cancel our race. The health and safety of our athletes, volunteers, spectators, family, and friends is our first priority and has led us to this decision. Gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited at this point. We have no way of knowing when that number will increase. We explored the option of postponing the event, but we struggled to select a time that we felt would be "clear" for this type of large event. There is no way of knowing, so we felt as though it was best to cancel.
All athletes will be deferred to next year's race which is always the end of June in conjunction with our Pre-4th community events. Having to cancel this year's race is a huge hit to the YMCA's non-profit budget since the Lake Hartwell Y Triathlon is the largest fundraiser that we have each year to support our YMCA and our Annual Campaign. We hope that our athletes understand our need to defer your entries to next year. Our Annual Campaign is money that we raise to give scholarships to families who could not otherwise afford to attend the YMCA and our programs. We offer scholarships to families who could not afford After School Care for their chidlren, Summer Camp, Swim Lessons, Soccer, and memberships. The Triathlon allows us to help teach a child how to swim or to give them a safe place to go in the summers while their parents or grandparents are working. We truly appreciate you registering for our triathlon and for the roll that you play in helping our community. You may never get to see the actual adult or child that you got to help by participating in our triathlon, but I can tell you that there are some really amazing stories. One of the stories is on our Facebook page. Aimee's story is a video that we made to share the impact that a scholarship has on someone's life. I encourage you to go to our FB page and hear her story. It is beautiful story. Thank you again for registering, for supporting the YMCA, and for your hard work as an athlete. This has been a difficult time for us all and I look forward to the day when some things will be back to normal, while other things are maybe a new normal.
Blessings to all and stay safe,
Mandy Floyd, YMCA Branch Director
