Mountains Of Misery

Sun May 27, 2018 Newport, VA 24128 US Directions

Participant Info

Training:

Every year we get questions about gearing.

If you are at all unsure of your ability to climb steep grades for long distances, use a triple. Compact doubles (34–50, etc.) are a good solution too.
If you insist on using a standard double (39–53), put the biggest gear on the back that you can. Even fit, professional racers would use a 25t gear in the back. Flatlanders beware!
The final climb to Mountain Lake is a lot harder with over 100 miles on your legs already. Consider this fair warning!

TriAdventure offers training plans and training rides during the late winter and spring time. Click on Training Plans to the left to learn more.

Weather:

Mountains Of Misery weather can change throughout the race. Be prepared for anything. Some years the heat will be stifling and some years you will want to start out in your jacket and arm warmers, only to warm up significantly as the day goes on. The last few years we've gotten a small shower in the late afternoon that has brought some relief to the heat for the riders. The average temperature for this time of year is 80 degrees, but the finish line area at Mountain Lake is always cooler.
